378. Mr Ned says:

He was on the BBC today saying Gordon Brown is the best thing since sliced bread. With judgement like that at the helm,

I think there is a case for a sidebar, separate site or whatever, just logging the various ‘great, good and all round goofy’ who seem to think going on record as saying stuff like that in what have seemed/seems a good idea then/now, and then available to call up in evidence from their own mouths in the future when been interviewed of judged for office, etc.

A bit like a FaceBook picture, six sheets to the wind, mooning a nun at the office party. Only a tad more damning as booze cannot be used as mitigation for such howlingly poor judgement.

Comment is free, until...

I was going to headline this 'Keep on digging', but actually it's all about stopping.

The Prime Minister yesterday decided to use the comfort zone of a low circulation broadsheet to share his latest 'vision'. We are about to take the war against terror to a new level

Sadly, it did not go quite as expected. Almost no one from what might be assumed to be a more receptive audience has responded very well.

I only share this by a rather odd response by the Guardian, with a cheery message from the 'CommunityMod': 'Please note, this thread will shortly be closing for the night. Thank you for your interest.'... Comments are now closed for this entry.

Not sure that worked out as well as it might, either: Amazing the number of threads in which the government and New Labour stooges get a right royal pasting which are then closed early. Wonder why that is?

is it usual for threads to be closed for the night? or only when the pm is getting his ass kicked black and blue? just asking...

I also liked this:

Says it all Gordie.

Comment may be free, but it seems only as long as those who control the medium are happy to allow the chips to fall where they may. Funny how 'liberal' media such as the Grauniad and the BBC seem prone to pulling things when the public don't cooperate.

Speaking of capturing moods... Gordon Brown strikes a false note on Jade Goody

Or...

BBC - PM leads tributes to Jade Goody - I thought he might have called her Jane Tweed based on his deep interest and awareness of the whole tragic tale.

Sorry. Devalued.

Newsnight

A poster reckons another apology is in order. I felt otherwise, and got a new acronym at least...

Yes, that should sort it. Just pop over to Mr. Robinson's blog to see how the notion is being received...

A sorry lot indeed.

I think that, with the example set by our media-politico media establishment of late, from Dear Leader to Mr. Ross, etc, I may have to have a wee chat with my boys about what counts as an apology, and what is just an apology for one.

How long before we get apology advocates on the public purse in this new, POOR 'process over obvious result' society that is being spun... staffed, paid, bonussed and pensioned?

Jobs for the boys

Reactions mixed as Highfield heads to MSFT

'...admired by many for his political nous while disliked by others for his inability to get projects launched.'

The state of the country, as 'reported upon' by the media efforts of such as the BBC, explained in a single sentence.

I gather Mr. Barron, ex-Newsnight, is doing well on Google's behalf on the plugging front; let's see what can be done to serve the public's interests here.

Ah... Britain, embodied by the BBC and its merry exchange programme of 'market rate talents' Let's call 'em 'Martas', on account of all the 'sacrifices' they make.

Who cares if it doesn't work so long as you have 'political nous'.

And I have to pay for this?

ACRONYM - FINC Tank

As we almost daily get subjected to them, from them, I feel an acronym is required:

Facile Initiative: No-one Cares (the tank refers to how the thing will go down once the public gets to grips with that latest from these covens 'of all the talents'.

THAT'S ALL WE HAVE TIME FOR

In the spirit of 'The Gord taketh, and the Gord, er, taketh yet more..'

I was just over at my Mum's, and sadly News 24 was already on. For this brief moment with the Chancellor on, in full waffle mode.

FULL CREDIT to the blonde for trying to make the point that the Europeans don't seem to be facing the same level of reaction in their banking community as does the UK in the face of this 'world crisis', especially in light of Mr. Brown's claim that the UK is well placed to weather this better than most.

Mr. Darling totally ignores this and goes straight back to talking about the bl**dy US situation.

He is either a liar or simply an idiot, yet will retire soon on a whopping pension co-funded by the likes of my Mum, who I have to care for.

However, and this is what gets me, this promising avenue of 'debate' is cut short...again (some Labour Pol waffling earlier seemed to be caught out on 'fact' by Rod Liddle in a piece on smoking, leaving me none the wiser as to what the truth was, and /or who these days is capable of speaking it)... probably to go to a critical skateboarding turtle update, by that most annoying of all news editorial/reporting/presenting mechanisms... 'THAT'S ALL WE HAVE TIME FOR'.

Why do we have 24/7 'news' if it is then incapable of running with a promising story as it unfolds!

New acronym - TAWHaTF (Thanks, but, what the F?)

All the 'news' that's unfit

Personally I think they are as bad as each other, with different national traits adding only further unsavoury local twists, but here's an interesting transatlantic discussion of our media options:

Look across the pond for a lesson in listening to the people

To be sure, it resonates with its description of a political and media elite here who seem to think they know better than the people. Not being supported greatly by recent elections, I mght add.

Indispensing wisdom

I noticed this in passing: Carol Vorderman quits Countdown 'after being told to take 90 per cent pay cut'

And simply wondered whether the bosses of the BBC, who negotiate 'stars'' salaries, and their bosses who 'negotiate' theirs, might have had a moment of reflection. Or, maybe, not.

Also the wording of the headline seems odd to me. Surely she was just made an offer and chose not to embrace it?

Telegraph - The problem of executive pay now share options aren't paying

The notion of rewarding numpties to stay in place just because no credible alternatives can be found seems prevalent these days.

Addendum - Just watched the Andrew Marr show, with all sorts of deputising both in government and the media world taking place at present, to and from all sorts of locations (Deputy PM Harriet Harman looking very golden, if not talking much sense), for all sorts of reasons. And while Huw Edwards was chatting with the early morning guests, not once but on three separate occasions they were disrupted by workers making off camera noises. And then our Carol's 'firing' came up.

Today's programme was a fair metaphor for the state and conduct of public service and broadcasting in these 'difficult international economic times', especially when so many are off for the summer (many fortunate enough for it to be all summer long). Whilst Ch4 and its employees seem to have to recognise the impact of the market conditions, it is interesting how government and some others can still operate to a different model. One where those at the top are allowed to continue doing their well paid jobs no matter what realities may exist around them, and whilst cuts must be made they will obviously take place where they can do the most good. But maybe the BBC could run to a person (or maybe ask an idle functionary to double up) who can address 'on camera' interruptions a bit sooner than the third time?

Addendum: there was also a segment with Sen. Obama's Chief of Staff.

I too, was interested in how Senator Obama was going to address the complexities of the economic vs. environmental 'pulls' of the climate change issue.

And now I know; "through a sensitivity to the magnitude of the problem'. Solved!

At least he is not going to insult us by suggesting it's all down to some where and someone else during these difficult economic times, followed by the jaw-dropper that 'we', apparently, all want the person most qualified to lead us through these (repeat, it may yet stick) difficult times (based on.... what? The last sets of voting results as a measure of what 'we' want. Or the situation 'we' are in after over decade's worth of prudent financial handling?) to 'stay focused on doing his/their job(s)'.

Strewth, in fact run those quotes on the campaign posters... for the Tories (who are very wise IMHO to keep schtum even if they are not being invited on, as frankly they seem to have sod all much of value to say either) and they'll be a shoo in anytime!

Times - Barack Obama: He came. He saw. He, er, left - Hope, dreams, freedom, a world made new.... “This is our moment to give our children back their future,” he declaimed. “This is the moment to stand as one” Hmn.

Eminence grease

I do believe ex-mayor Livingstone has something on Andrew Marr.

I have just coined another acronym GOing Through ThE Motions (GOTTEM)

A very 'civilised' interview with ex-mayor Ken Livingstone just now.

However, I was a little surprised that Andrew did not pick his interviewee up more on the related issues of delegation, deputising and responsibilities.

I do believe that under the previous administration there might have been more tangible, as opposed to alluded to, examples of dubious practices amongst senior subordinates. It's a shame these were not raised to remind all concerned.

Also, as experience with Gordon Brown seems to be showing, the CEO trying to be on top of and/or doing everything isn't the smartest move. Perhaps building competent teams, leading from the top, staying hands off (but maintaining a watching brief) might be worth a shot?

I am sure Gerry Robinson would agree.

Taking the p*ss

I don't claim it's an easy line, but our messengers often seem to get pretty mixed up with how they share our messages.

For most of the lunchtime BBC news, we have had a gleeful collection of reporters and anchors falling over themselves to enjoy if not share in the fact that the victorious Man U side spent all night getting hammered.

So far, so inevitable.

I just wonder which irony-free numptie didn't think how that segued so smoothly into a sanctimonious piece about how 'we' as a nation were drinking ourselves into being banned from the NHS for not being healthy enough to be admitted.

It looks like it is a serious issue. I'm just not sure our national broadcaster is very serious in addressing it consistently in complement. Another propagandist Oh Lord HIAW HIAW Having it all ways (repeat) Having it all ways.
